The next researcher to step into the spotlights is Anda Ādamsone-Fiskoviča. She is a senior researcher and the national team leader for RestPoll at the Baltic Studies Centre (BSC) in Riga, Latvia. Her approach to sustainable farming comes from a background in sociology as well as science and technology studies, combining the interests of people and nature.
Sustainable farming
Anda has been studying the interactions between science, technology and society for decades. Her particular interest during the last ten years is in social studies of agriculture and food. The theme of sustainable farming has run through her many projects at the Baltic Studies Centre.
For the Living Lab activities in Latvia, Anda and her colleagues have chosen the GrassLIFE project coordinated by the Latvian Fund for Nature as a basis. This project aims to restore EU priority grasslands in Latvia, which provide important pollinator-friendly habitats and other ecosystem services, including flower strips. The RestPoll project undertakes pollinator monitoring in the case study area. In addition, the project is keen on engaging different stakeholders to understand their views and experiences regarding pollinator-friendly practices. These stakeholders include farmers, researchers, advisors, environmental NGOs, local authorities and community members.
National team leader
With her background, it is small wonder that Anda feels right at home in the RestPoll project. She can combine her interests in farming and society through its objectives. Strengthening society’s capability to reverse pollinator decline while also stabilising pollination services and their societal benefits is an ambition she shares in particular.
Her tasks in the Latvian part of the RestPoll project include managing the local Living Lab and organising the different activities in the selected case study area. In her own research, she assesses socio-economic benefits, barriers and incentives to restore pollinators. She also explores land user or and views and experiences of such restoration. In addition, she analyses the policy framework for pollinator-friendly practices, such as flower strips.
As a sociologist, Anda will make sure that her research for RestPoll reaps rewards not only for nature, but also for people.
